Subject: October buyer digest: compare the work before comparing the price

Preheader: Consolidation, risk assessments and a more useful way to read a security quote.

Edition: October 2026, month-to-date through 20 October; not a full-month retrospective.

One theme: a larger platform still needs a clear service boundary

NetSPI's current transaction FAQ says its merger with Synack closed in October 2026. The company describes continuity for existing engagements, while the combination brings together different delivery models. Do not assume that a combined brand means every platform, contract or support process is already integrated. Read the customer FAQ.

Buyer question: which capabilities are available under our existing agreement today, which need a new order, and which are only planned?

September context: risk assessments should lead to decisions

NYDFS issued risk-assessment guidance on 10 September. The guidance says it does not create new obligations, but it is useful for testing whether an assessment connects the actual environment to control choices. Official guidance.

Buyer action: select one high-priority assessment finding and trace it to an owner, evidence and a funded treatment or recorded acceptance. A score with no decision attached is a weak deliverable.

Price check: a license is only one line of the operating model

Microsoft's US page lists Defender for Business at $3 per user per month on an annual plan, within its stated product limits. That is an observable software reference point, not an MDR market rate. Current product page, checked 20 October.

For a renewal comparison, separate service fees, required licenses, onboarding, log consumption, incident work and the hours your own staff must contribute. Put “quote required” against an unknown. A blank or a zero can make the wrong offer look cheaper.

People and process: assurance work is real work

Tines's employer posting for a Senior GRC Analyst describes evidence, compliance and review responsibilities. It is one company's advertised role, not a statistical picture of the whole market. It does, however, make a useful planning question concrete: who in your team owns the evidence and customer-assurance queue? Employer posting, observed at the cutoff.

If the answer is “everyone occasionally,” record the volume and deadlines before deciding whether to hire, automate or buy advisory help.

This month's worksheet

Build a one-page table with five columns: requirement, included scope, buyer-owned work, evidence and full-year cost. Ask each finalist to complete the same rows. Then ask your internal owners whether the remaining workload is realistic.

Add one exit question: if we leave this service, can we obtain the required data, revoke access and maintain coverage during transition? Decide that before signing, while the account team is still helping define the agreement.

What to carry into November

Check notice deadlines now. Keep proposed regulatory changes in a separate watch list from effective duties. Ask for a demonstration of one difficult hand-off, and record the conditions that must be satisfied before service acceptance.

This is a planning agenda, not a prediction of next month's incidents or a reason to buy every new product.
