Does a vCISO replace our security team?

A vCISO can provide leadership and program management, but operational staffing must be specified separately. Ask what the named person will own and what work still requires your IT team.

Truvantis's published vCISO offering describes modular program, risk and compliance work. It is a useful category example, not an independent assessment of service quality or a promise that all execution is included.

For a first quarter, request a prioritized risk register, accountable owners, a funded work plan, board-ready reporting and a tested incident decision process. Define available hours, meeting cadence, access to specialists and emergency availability. Ask whether implementation is included, referred to another team or separately quoted. Check whether the same firm would assess controls it implemented and how that conflict would be handled.

If the immediate problem is unattended alerts, buying advisory hours alone will leave it unresolved. If the problem is competing priorities and no executive owner, adding another console may do the same.
