Planning allowance: 1–2 weeks; 12–24 hours. Reconcile identity, endpoint-management, cloud-billing and network records. Explain differences rather than quietly selecting the smallest count. Separate active staff from service accounts, ordinary endpoints from servers, and corporate IT from clinical or operational equipment.
Use this row format:
| Asset group | Quantity and source date | Critical owner | License/tier | Reporting status | Exception |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example group to fill in | Count to verify | Named person | Invoice/console evidence | Observed, stale or unknown | Owner and decision date |
Check whether the service can collect the particular logs you need, and who pays upstream ingestion or export charges. CISA's MSP customer guidance makes service visibility a useful due-diligence topic; your own count and evidence must establish the answer.
Contact: system administrators, application owners, facilities/plant IT and any outsourced IT team. Exit criterion: every critical business process has a technology owner and a known or explicitly unresolved coverage state. Pitfall: treating an integration logo as proof that the required log types are flowing.
